Ah ha! As a self-taught painter myself and a great admirer of your determination and and fantastic sense of color, I think I've found a kindred spirit here. Ireally like the progression of this piece, as well as your textured painting below. I think the first version of this composition would translate quite well to a very large piece.
Cynthia, Love the colors and like the way you played with it all...the last one seems to be final as it looks as if you went back in and anchored some color shapes...I LIKE YOUR PLAY!
Eve...thanks for your comment and that is very interesting that you like the first one. I am learning with painting you can just keep going and going, unlike mosaics...I think thats the part I'm having so much fun with! I am working in the same abstract style I was doing with mosaics, but forever trying different placement before gluing..and spending so much time on that process, but with painting I can do the same thing in seconds and paint over if I don't like it.
Robyn...thanks for your comments and yes, the process with painting feels so free and limitless. Your medium of carving wood, I would think, has to be planned out as part of the process, less the knife does not do what you want it to, and maybe you would have to start over, or maybe you would just incorporate that bit into your work?
Kathy...thanks so much for your comments. That is an interesting thought to turn the first version into a larger painting, for I am experimenting with smaller canvases, as I have a very large canvas next to work on...which I'm a little intimidated to start :o)
Mary Ann..thanks for your comments..not sure if the last one is final, for some reason doesn't seem quite, and some parts I am not happy with...but I have ended up covering over things which I wished I hadn't...so it is a learning experience for me to know when to stop...guess I'll just put it aside for awhile...
Donna...Thanks so much for your comments....that is interesting that you used the term expressive, because I tend to think of myself as an abstract impressionist...and I appreciate your words, because you are such an inspiration to me!
Denise...Yes, usually I don't ask for feedback, but I recently returned to painting after spending many years with the medium of mosaics, so I guess I'm feeling a little bit intimidated by the medium of paint and mixed media, but I am getting my balance with each piece I do.
having fun is all that matters isn't it . the hardest part of being an artist is knowing when to stop, it's all about making decisions and just hoping they're the right ones... i think that's what i love about mosaic , you can place it and then move it around until your happy, ( which can sometimes take a very long time ) with paint it's just so final. i love your colours , i'm reminded a little of cavemen paintings... are you finished yet ?
The last is my favourite, and it says Hermes silk headscarf to me. I hope that isn't trivialising it, because I like it a lot, and I probably make the scarf connection because of the soft and harmonious fluidity of the colours and lines.
Elaine...Thanks for your comments. That is very interesting that you see mosaics as easily changeable whereas, for me, mosaics are so difficult to change, and I see painting as so easily changeable! I'm finding the more painting I do, the more I am seeing exactly when to stop. This piece goes on to the next post, where it is finished.
Mise...thanks for your comments. I love what you said about the comparison to Hermes silk scarves...they are gorgeous and I'll take that as a big compliment!
Seth...thanks so much for your comments...black is an interesting color...can be used for so many things...and even some people, like my friend Elaine (jaboopee) uses black very successfully as wall color in her beautiful house!

I really like the first one. :)
Having fun is...fun! and necessary.
Each stage is a great painting in it's own right. Keep on trying different things .... I'm enjoying the process.

these are expressive and layered with movement and feeling
If the piece was about learning and discovery, then,
as long as YOU
discovered something, to hell with
what others think!

I love your use of the black. It contrasts so well with all the other lighter colors.
