The Sea
I have been longing for the ocean, so I thought I would post a few photos of one of my favorite things...seaweed. I'm not sure what I find so intriguing and beautiful about these plants from the sea, maybe its that they appear so strange when compared with plants grown in soil....they seem so mysterious and almost alien, as if maybe they came from somewhere out in the cosmos. Just one of the many beautiful treasures from the ocean.

Not only are they amazing to look at they are also loaded with nutrients...lately I have been taking plant based calcium (from Iceland) that is from sea plants.
I love this stuff too! I've never seen seaweed like this on the East Coast or the Gulf of Mexico beaches but I found some amazing stuff like this in San Diego. It does look alien - like a floating world.
Mary Ann...yes, I forgot about the nutrients contained in seaweed, and I think many Japanese dishes use seaweed.
Eve...I guess this is the west coast kind of seaweed....this seaweed was from San Simeon, just south of Big Sur, and I have seen it all along the west coast.

This seaweed is much different from what we get on the East Coast, and it's fascinating! Thanks for sharing.

Leslie...I shall have to make it a point to visit the east coast to see what the seaweed looks like...sigh...hopefully someday I'll get there.

I know a lady who used seaweed to weave with.
Was a bit stinky, but the effect was gorgeous.
We could feed the planet with that stuff. Beautiful and mysterious.

great photos! I miss the sea too, but I'm going back home to my seaside town tomorrow. Yippee!!! (It's great as a fertilizer on gardens ... but you have to wash the salt off first)

Robyn....funny, when we were kids playing on the beach, we were almost afraid of the seaweed....
I also love the ocean/sea and whatever comes out and lands on the beach-- weathered driftwood, rocks, seaweed which can be so textured.

Thanks for your comment about my transfers on La Dolce Vita. It's funny to see this post now because I was just going through my photos and printed up a bunch of close-ups from beaches in Maine and was going to do some image transfer with them. They remind me of what you have here. Consider me a new follower!

Your photos remind me that, as a child, I used to trampoline on the great bales of seaweed sitting by the shore waiting for the lorries to come and start them on their journey to Japan. There was nothing like them for smell and fun and bounciness.

It IS alien- we can't breathe where this stuff grows! Makes me want to learn to dive.
Lynn...yes, alien....kind of reminds me of the alien from the movie "Alien"....
